The Storm in the Northeast of America: Proof of the Power of Internet Uptime

Until disaster strikes, we really don’ realize just how much we rely upon technology. Alertra noticed that there were quite a few tweets that instructed power customers to report power outages via a website. Of course, we wondered how customers without power were exactly expected to do that. While we usually discuss utilizing services to ensure website uptime, the recent storm has helped us realize that not only businesses need help in this Internet-driven world that we now live in. What can you do if the power goes out and you need to communicate via the Web?

Look for W-Fi

Now, we’re not advising that you head out in the middle of a storm to find a Wi-Fi connection, but you’d be surprised at how neighborly people can become when Mother Nature strikes. It’s not uncommon for one person’s power to go out while the power is on right down the block. If you have a laptop with some juice in it and you can get the neighbor with Wi-Fi to give you some temporary access, you can indeed use the Internet to report the outage and send out some last-minute emergency contacts to friends and business associates letting them know that you’re okay but you’ll be offline till the power outage resolves itself

Use a HotSpot

Again, this requires the use of a laptop with some juice left in it (and keep a charged backup battery on hand), but go ahead and invest in a 3G Internet device for times like these. Not only can you use the device in power outage emergencies, but it will allow you to take the Internet with you wherever you go. With reasonably-priced plans, those of you who live on the Web may think the monthly investment is well worth the price that you will pay.

When the Roads Clear

The roads are clear and your power is still out. That Starbuck’s down the street, however, has power on and there’s free Wi-Fi. Go ahead and treat yourself to a Venti latte and catch up on emails while you enjoy the Starbuck’s ambiance. It’s not a perfect fix but it will give you some email uptime to catch up on messages that you need to reply to.

Be Understanding of Website Outages

Now, more than ever, you will need to be understanding of website outages. Some businesses are experiencing the very same thing you are going through – and trust us it’s no easier for them than it is for you. Remember, while it’s a computer screen we are looking at, it’s real people behind the monitors on the other side. They deserve the same patience and respect that you do.
